Online Leadership Center Offers Customized Information for Officers
During the past year, Phi Mu’s National Council recognized the potential to improve the comprehension, participation, and resourcefulness of our officer training materials for both collegiate officers and advisory councils. They determined that an online officer training site was the best way to accomplish these goals.
In January 2009, the Phi Mu Leadership Center was launched http://lc.phimu.org. The website improves the usefulness of officer training materials, personalizes the training by officer type, and includes various types of media such as PowerPoint presentations and podcasts.
Rachel Herring, ΑΕ, Programming and Leadership Development Coordinator, spent several months determining what should be included on the Web site: “Instead of the proverbial ‘milk crate’ of files that is passed down from officer to officer, important information and resources can now be found online in one, well-organized place,” says Rachel.
Features of the Leadership Center include:
• A pop-up bulletin board with reminders for time sensitive material • A timeline with important due dates and events • An action plan to categorize the weekly, monthly and annual duties • A podcast with the “Top 5 ‘Musts’ of a Phi Mu Leader” • Important contact information for Headquarters staff, national and area officers, and advisers • A “tool box” that houses important documents such as forms, reports, manuals • An interactive forum to share ideas with leaders from other chapters
By providing officer tools that utilize the latest technology, Phi Mu’s National Council hopes to increase our officer and adviser participation in officer training and to improve the quality of education that is received. This Web site also ensures that we remain competitive with other national organizations who have already implemented similar programs.
The Leadership Center also enables our officers and advisers to receive training in a timely manner. Content on the site can be updated by Headquarters staff with ease. As policies and procedures change, the information is passed on to our leaders immediately.
Another important aspect of the Web site is that it addresses more than Phi Mu-specific training. It focuses heavily on overall leadership development, goal setting, group dynamics, conflict resolution, citizenship, education, and other important life skills. The overall goal of the center is to cultivate our Phi Mu leaders at the same time as educate them. “The Phi Mu Leadership Center will not just make being a chapter officer or adviser easier,” says Rachel, “it will truly help our members develop their full leadership potential.”
