Roaring with Pride - Phi Mu Installs Two New Chaptersby Beth Denney Ward, ΔΗ, Vice President Collegiate Membership
The extension process is both exciting and challenging. The process of establishing new Phi Mu chapters is among the most time-consuming yet rewarding work for volunteers and staff alike. And the culmination of the entire effort is the installation of the new chapters. It represents the realization of a dream to continue to expand the reach of Phi Mu to campuses all over the country.
In 2008, two campuses joined Phi Mu: Huntingdon College, Theta Kappa and Grand Valley State University, Rho Eta. Both were successfully installed last fall. In order to take a colony to a fully-installed chapter, much preparation is necessary. Resident Chapter Consultants Samantha Walker, ΘΑ, and April Field, ΑΨ, were charged with leading the new members of Theta Kappa and Rho Eta through the Phi program; organizing colony operations; establishing and training officers and committees; and member retention for the eight-week period following Bid Day.
Samantha and April, along with the colony support team of Jessica Winkles, ΚΦ, Colony Coordinator at Headquarters and volunteers Kendra Edwards, KN, Colony Membership Coordinator; Whitney Rice Durham, ΚΝ, Colony Operations Coordinator; and Beth Reisinger, ΦΘ, Colony Finance Coordinator; as well as local advisory councils, made it possible for 96 women to become new Phi Mu sisters.
Theta Kappa Chapter, Huntingdon College
National President Robin White Fanning, BI, installed Theta Kappa Chapter at Huntingdon College on Sunday, November 2, 2008. The bond of Phi Mu was extended to 25 new members at the college located in Montgomery, Ala. The installation was held at the First Baptist Church of Montgomery with an hors d’oeuvres reception following the ceremony for the new sisters, their friends and family, and participating alumnae.
Attending and supporting the event were: Darlene Reyes, KH, Executive Director; Jessica Winkles; Samantha Walker; Daphne Arnold, ΔΛ, Chapter Consultant; Mary Young, AZ, Area III Membership Coordinator; Misty Garrett, KI, Area III Operations Director; Theta Kappa Advisory Council members Jamie Mitchell, ΑΔ, Jennifer Oravet, ΑΜ, and Linda Tilly, ΑM; local alumnae Lila Harris, ΚΣ and Lee Schwartzenburg, ΚΧ; the Montgomery Alumnae Chapter; Kappa Sigma Chapter at Jacksonville State University; and Alpha Zeta Chapter at the University of Alabama.
Rho Eta Chapter, Grand Valley State University
Rho Eta Chapter at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. was installed on Saturday, December 6, 2008. A full team of Phi Mu officers and numerous Phi Mu members planned to attend the installation including: Robin Fanning, National President; Shani Burley-Moore, KA, Vice President Alumnae; Andrea Anderson, ΔΑ, Area I Collegiate Operations Coordinator; and collegians from Rho Alpha Chapter at IUPUI. However, a Michigan snow storm made it impossible for them to travel that day!
Chapter Consultants April Field and Torri Steers, EN, rose to the occasion and led the initiation of 71 new Phi Mu sisters. They were supported by local alumnae and Rho Eta advisory council members Maggie Morrison, ΔΠ, Chapter Adviser; Jennifer Hunt, ΡΔ, Membership Adviser; Rachael Stern, ΖΝ, Provisional Member Adviser; Kathryn Swan, ΔΝ, Chapter Development Adviser; Deanna Westfall, ΡΕ, Local Alumnae Chapter President; and members of the Rho Beta Chapter at the University of Michigan, Dearborn.
