Honoring the Faithful: 1852 Society Dinner by Audrey Jankucic, ΒΨ, University of Southern Maine
Every Phi Mu Convention has certain events each of us looks forward to. For some it’s the opening banquet, others savor the awards ceremonies, but for many, it’s the 1852 Society dinner. Orlando’s version proved to be a once-in-a-lifetime event with Dana Ivey, ΑΩ, joining the evergrowing group of faithful sisters and guests who gathered to celebrate Phi Mu Foundation and its major initiatives. Dana shared her journey with the group, telling us about her life leading up to the time when she joined Phi Mu. She also shared her professional story, specifically how she become a successful Broadway and film actress. Often asked which of her roles is her favorite, Dana described the journey of character development, and about how each role has its gifts and limitations, making it impossible to choose one over another. After dinner, Dana graciously joined the group for a number of photos and an opportunity for everyone to meet her one-on-one. This particular 1852 dinner represented a milestone that merits mention. Joan Wallem, ΔΒ, 1852 Society Chairman, officially retired from years of inspirational leadership of the group. It was a tearful goodbye. Joan has been a wonderful role model for so many of us. Her presence at this Convention was no different. Joan showed us how to be graceful in departing from a role she’s come to define. We will miss Joan’s guidance and care, but look forward to her continued presence at future 1852 events as well as new leadership under Gail Highland, ΔΛ.
