What it is: The alliance of 170 premier children’s hospitals in North America, which treat 17 million children each year for every disease and condition imaginable.

How it helps: Raises much-needed funds to pay for life-saving equipment, charity care and breakthrough research. How it does it: Through corporate sponsors and events such as the annual televised fundraiser, the Children’s Miracle Network Celebration.

How much it’s raised: More than $2.7 billion for hospitalized children since 1983.

  • 98 percent of all children needing heart or lung transplants
  • 90 percent of all children with sickle cell anemia
  • 88 percent of all children with cancer
  • 76 percent of all children with cystic fibrosis
  • 72 percent of children with pediatric AIDS
  • 6 million children for accident trauma each year
  • 49,000 children with cancer each year
  • 45,000 children for heart defects and problems each year
  • 1,300 children for sickle cell anemia each year
